Caveman – Im Ready [1991]

Another UK Hip Hop artist, definitely more closely aligned with the New York sound than his contemporaries. Called out for that by Gunshot and Hijack for that reason, Caveman might have vanished off the face of the Earth for the UK underground hip hop scene had it not been for the consistently superb lyrical wranglings and catch as all hell hooks and beats. Sounding more like Kool Keith than like Ice Cube, at a time when Hardcore Hip Hop dominated the scene, not only was this track a breath of fresh air, it was a relief to hear some fun Hip Hop for a change.

The main sample is from “Crosstown Traffic” by Jimi Hendrix, the “You Ready” sample is from the These are the JB’s from the JB’s.

From Discogs
Caveman came from High Wycombe and were one of the first UK acts to be signed to a major label, in Profile, after they heard one of their demo tapes at a young age. Their first release was the excellent ‘Victory’, which lead to many years of recording for the same label.
